Venus is one of the very brightest planets. It is distinctive in appearance since it goes through a cycle of phases with shapes much like our own Moon.
Since its orbit is closer to the Sun than Earth's orbit, Venus never appears to stray far from the Sun, so it is usually visible in early evening after sunset or just before dawn.
