October 2008 - Greetings from
the International Asteroid Search Campaign Congratulations are in order. We have a number of
new Main Belt asteroid discoveries!! ...Discovery is a 2-step process. The first step is the original discovery. Within 7 days a set of follow-up images has to be taken by the ARI with the asteroid appearing in these images, as well. This is the reason why we ask you to have your students complete their image set analyses within 48 hours to give the ARI sufficient time to take the follow-up images on any of your discoveries. ...Credit for a discovery goes to the students analyzing the follow-up images and not the original image set, in which the asteroid is first observed. This is a requirement of the Minor Planet Center at Harvard, and not of IASC. It's just the way that the MPC keeps track of discoveries....
